Power Washing Your Driveway: How Often Is Too Often?

Power washing a driveway looks dramatic and satisfying, but concrete, pavers, wood decking, and vinyl siding all respond to pressure completely differently, and using one setting across all of them is how surfaces get etched, cracked, or stripped bare instead of just cleaned.

Plain concrete can typically handle higher PSI and a once-a-year cleaning without issue, but interlocking pavers need noticeably gentler pressure — too much force can blow sand right out of the joints between them, which weakens the whole surface over time and isn't something you notice until the pavers start shifting.

Timing matters as much as pressure. Washing right before a hard freeze traps moisture in tiny surface pores that then expands as it freezes, which is a common way driveways develop cracking that has nothing to do with age. Late fall washing should generally happen with enough time to dry fully before temperatures drop, or wait until spring instead.

Sealing a surface after washing is what actually extends the interval between cleanings — a properly sealed driveway sheds grime and staining far better than an unsealed one, meaning less frequent washing is needed overall. We calibrate PSI per surface type on every job, because the goal is a clean driveway, not a damaged one.
