Then the rug is beaten and dusted to drive out dry soil. Sand is heavy and falls out first; fine dust and pollen follow.

The wash itself depends on the rug. Sisal and seagrass shrink and brown if over-wet, while wool, cotton and synthetics each take water in their own way.

Painted floors and old pine boards can stain if a rug goes back damp. So rugs dry in a controlled room, never outdoors, and only come back once they are bone dry.

Pet urine needs a separate treatment that reaches the backing. Mention any pet spots when you book.

When we return, the rug is laid down in place with its pad, which keeps it flat and stops it from sliding on smooth floors.

Expect the rugs back in about a week. During the busiest summer weeks, booking early keeps the timing easy.
